This module equips students with the fundamental concepts and principles of financial accounting. Students will gain practical knowledge of the preparation of the accounting requirements of a sole trader, including transactions, inventory systems, reconciliations, property, plant and equipment, and financial statements
As one of the core modules across the BCom qualification family, Accounting helps students build the foundational knowledge needed for all aspects of commerce. It also supports students in understanding basic accounting practices and exploring which specialisation they may want to pursue.
IN THE DEGREE
This is one of the first four modules you need to complete to be able to select either the Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting, Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing or the Bachelor of Commerce.
As one of the core modules across the BCom qualification family, Accounting helps students build the foundational knowledge needed for all aspects of commerce. It also supports students in understanding basic accounting practices and exploring which specialisation they may want to pursue.
By the end of this module, students will be able to:
- Explain and describe the concepts and terminology used in accounting.
- Analyse transactions of a sole trader and indicate the impact on the elements of the accounting equation and general ledger accounts.
- Demonstrate an understanding of periodic and perpetual inventory systems of a sole trader.
- Understand the procedures for cash and trade receivables reconciliation.
- Calculate and interpret the transactions for the sale of property, plant and equipment.
- Prepare the financial statements of a sole trader.
