Module Overview

Business Management 1B introduces students to the main functions of a business and the role of leadership in effective management. Students will build general management knowledge and skills that can help them contribute confidently in a business environment.

The module explores important areas of business management, including operations management, human resources planning and recruitment, marketing, financial management, purchasing and supply chain management. As a compulsory module shared across the BCom qualification family, Business Management 1B supports further learning in management, business and commerce-related modules.

IN THE DEGREE

As management is a key business competency this module is in the curriculum of the Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting, Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and Bachelor of Commerce qualifications. It builds on the foundational knowledge of Business Management 1A with a focus on key business functions and management practices.

The module supports their ability to function effectively within diverse organisational contexts and prepares them for further learning across all commercial disciplines.

  • Select and apply standard theories and methods of operations management.
  • Evaluate operations management issues critically.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of human resources planning and recruitment, including the relevant labour legislation.
  • Evaluate marketing principles, practices and techniques critically.
  • Discuss the basic tasks of financial management, including the importance of financial statements.
  • Discuss the importance of the purchasing and supply chain management function.
