This module introduces students to business management and
entrepreneurship in the South African business environment. Students
will explore how businesses work, what makes them successful, and the
many opportunities that exist in the world of business.
Students will also learn about private enterprise, small business, effective
management and productivity. The module is designed to build their
interest in business and help them develop the thinking and skills needed
to succeed as future entrepreneurs or business professionals
By the end of this module, students will be able to:
- Understand the concepts of the business world, business management and the essential role of business in society.
- Define the terms “entrepreneur” and “entrepreneurship”, and describe the profile of a successful entrepreneur.
- Explain and analyse the different forms of enterprise ownership found in South Africa.
- Explain the importance of the correct geographical location of a business.
- Give an overview of the role of management in businesses and summarise the definition of management.
- Identify the benefits and costs of planning, and discuss the need for managerial goals and plans.
- Discuss the importance of organising and describe its fundamental elements.
- Explain the nature and components of leadership.
- Differentiate between leadership and management.
- Understand the purpose of control and illustrate the control process.
- Identify and define the six essential functional areas of management: operations, human resources, marketing, finance, purchasing and supply management, and information and communication technology.
This is a key module in the Higher Certificate in Business Administration.
It gives students the foundation they need to understand business,
develop important business skills, and prepare for further learning and
participation in the workplace.
By introducing students to core business concepts, entrepreneurship
and the functional areas of management, the module helps them build
confidence in how businesses operate and how effective management
contributes to business success.
